Hey KORNHOLIO,
I know three people in B-N that have been bitten (including our eye doctor). They aren't supposed to live in this climate, however there are 13 known species of recluses (one key feature of all the species is that they only have 6 eyes). A prof at SIU was doing a study of their population density in IL, if I remember right. They are EXTREMELY fast, and the vast majority of bites are painless. If they bite you on a finger, you can lose the finger since the poison causes tissue necrosis that never heals. The Clinton jail had to be fumigated for them, (had something like 38 prisoners bitten). A relative of the ex-girlfriend's had a house infested with 'em (one her husband's friend's had to have emergency surgery to save his leg after a bite. It starts out with red streaks of the poison spreading and deteriorates quickly). Exterminator said they're damn near impossible to get rid of since ou actually have to hit them with the poison. And they are cannibals, so their populations can explode. Word of advice: if you're working in your attic, WEAR GLOVES.
BTW, Kornholio and any posters that live in the Northeast, the HOBO SPIDER was recently identified as being venemous to humans by the CDC (in 1995 I believe). Their bite is very similiar to the recluse, but these spider don't have the telltale violin shape on the thorax. On a different note, in the past before indoor plumbing, one of the most common sites of black widow bites was the penis (flies come to eat the shit in the outhouse, spider comes to eat the flies, cowboy comes to empty the bowels, and you have a recipe for penile disaster.
